We are the Body…Week Five

Welcome to the fifth week of We Are the Body. We are thrilled you are joining us. This Bible study will be slightly different than our last one in that we won’t have video or a study guide. However, we will a time of Deeper Refinement that will allow you to spend the week digging a little further into each week’s lesson. Please make sure to leave your link, or let us know through the comment section, if you are participating so that we can pray for everyone involved!

The View…From my Window

Lessons being learned by an “old lady” while living on an college campus!

Since my family lives on a college campus and we happen to be the most accessible adults, we regularly get knocks on our front door from students who have needs. Recently that very thing happened. We were enjoying a few quiet moments together when the knock came on our door. Inside I cringed. “WHAT NOW?” I thought, “We hadn’t had a quiet evening together for awhile.”

My husband went out front to answer the door and there stood a young lady. She was sick, and needed to go to the emergency room. Brian came back to our room, got his keys, and said, “I need to take a student to the hospital.” I selfishly replied, “There goes our evening together!” He looked at me with a disappointed glance and said, “I’m sorry…” Then he was gone. I immediately felt convicted.

Service/serving has been an ongoing lesson for me. God is continually reminding me that the Christian life comes down to one thing…serving. So what is service? What does it mean to be called to be a servant?

The scriptures tell us that serving means choosing “death to self,” choosing to give up what might be considered your “right” to something. It also can mean choosing to be the least, the one in the background, the one not noticed. It can mean to choose not to speak, to not have to be heard…it is choosing to focus on others in our speech, or to build others up. It can take on many forms.

In Luke 9 we see Jesus serving by washing the feet of his disciples. Those who washed dirty feet were considered to be the “lowest.” Our Savior, who deserved to have His feet washed, chose to wash the feet of his Disciples and show the ultimate example of service. That was true service, true greatness! Matt. 20:26 says “Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.” In John 13, Jesus challenges his disciples again by saying, “If I then, your Lord, and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet, for I have given you an example.”

Our mind set should be one that is “others oriented.” We should rely on the Holy Spirit to lead us throughout the day into acts of service: whether big or small, whether noticed or not noticed; through a word, or an action, or silence, anything that puts another before ourselves. It may mean meeting a need regardless of the time of day or night, and being content to have, as Richard Foster describes it, “the divine nod of approval,” or, as Ephesians 6:7 says, doing service “as unto the Lord and not unto men.”

Being hospitable is a way of serving. The word “hospitable” comes from the word “hospital.” According to the dictionary, “hospitable” means to “to treat guests with warmth and generosity.” A hospital is a place where the sick and injured go to get help. To be healed. We can act as a “hospital” to those around us by “showing hospitality”…we can show warmth and generosity…in our homes, in the grocery store, wherever we are. We can have the mind set of seeking to meet the needs of those around us!

Gal. 6:2 tells us to “bear one another’s burdens.” James 2:8 tells us to “love your neighbor as yourself”.. Phil 2:3 tells us to “regard one another as more important that yourself,” to look out for the interests of others, to have the attitude of a bond servant, as Jesus did. Romans 12:15 tells us to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. James 2:9 tells us to not show partiality. I Peter 5:5 tells us to clothe ourselves with humility towards one another. And, In Matthew 5:44 we are told to serve even our enemies. And, finally, we are told to do unto others as we would have them do to us.

I recently spoke with an young, overwhelmed pastor’s wife. Her question to me was, “Gina, how much of myself do I have to give up?!” That is a good question.

What did Christ give up? We have seen his example of what might be considered a “small” act of service. But, his ultimate act – His death on the Cross – was also his example of how much we are called to give of ourselves.

Philippians 2 answers the young pastors wife’s question…and any of us who have asked the same question at one time or another. It says, “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

On this campus.
In my home.
Wherever I go.
Whomever I am with.
Just serve.
And when I feel like I have nothing left to give…
Pray.
And keep on serving.

Just like Jesus did!

Share what serving means to you and what it looks like (or should look like) in your day to day life.

Last week, we took some time to record our encounters with people the Lord put in our path. This week we are going to be intentional. We are going to put into practice four commands that we have been given on servant-hood.

1. John 13:14 (washing feet) Choose one person in your life, or just someone you encounter, and wash their feet. Yes!  Literally, wash their feet. As you do so tell them how much you love them just a Jesus Christ, the one who died for them, loves them.

2. James 2:8 (loving our neighbor) Visit your next door neighbor, or someone who lives a few houses from you and ask them if there is something you can pray for them about.  Take a baked good or meal with you when you go. If  you know of a need that you can meet for them… do it!

3. Galatians 6:2 (bearing one anothers burdens) Seek someone out this week that you can intentionally pray for. Sit down with this person or call them up on the phone and “bear” their burdens with them.

4. Matthew 5:44 (serving our enemies) This may be the hardest of all. Think of someone in your life that you are at odds with or someone you just have a hard time liking. It’s sacrificial love time girls. Think of a way to serve this person and love on this person.

Record all of these tasks in your journal as you do them. Pray over them continually.

You can come back anytime this week and add your link below, or share in the comments, if you choose to share what the Lord has shown you through this.

If you are doing this study with us, please take a moment and add your link so we can pray for you during our 8 weeks together.

this week’s lesson spoke to me in volumes, because I am at a crossroads right now in terms of whether I have to give something up and serve Him somewhere else, or am I actually meant to serve Him right here, where I am? So thank you for this lesson as it helps me pray for His will to be done and for discernment.

    Blessings!

every week I am finding myself reading something I’ve asked God earlier to really teach me or just show me – again it happened today as I read. I have a tough time with one person in my life. I’ve learned she likes to be right all the time, loves to argue, and is very confrontational. I’m non of the above. But I do have to see this girl 5 out of 7 days. I do take care of her little girl all day long. I am kind. I am quiet. I do not argue with her. I teach her little girl about the Bible through stories and songs. Now I just have to get over the fear of this girl – What can man do unto me? – and really love her.

Hi Naomi! I will pray for you…and you can pray as well…that God would change your heart and that He would put HIS love in your heart for this person. I have had to do this before, and I can tell you that only He can change our hearts and He truly will! I have experienced it myself!

And, if you can “preach the gospel to yourself” every day…meaning…reminding yourself each day of how Christ died for you and that is the reason you can face each day without condemnation…then it does help us see others through eyes of Grace. When we reflect every day on how undeserving we are, and how much mercy God has poured out on us ON A DAILY BASIS, it does help us show that same grace towards others, even when they are difficult!

What an encouragement that you are already seeking to love and serve this person! God is seen in that!

      Grace to you!

Gina, beautiful words of truth, these:

This is good. I love to see how God is just molding me and shaping me throughout this entire study. Looking back such a short time, and it’s not over yet, so much has changed. This has definitely been a very beneficial thing this summer. It has not always been comfortable but that’s a sign of growth. Thanks for doing this.

I have one post that I wrote a few weeks back which I never linked. It is about relationships and the body so it goes well with our study. I’ll just link it above on this week’s entries if you don’t mind.

    Blessings to all.

A ‘quote of the note’ if ever I read one!

    “In my home.
    Wherever I go.
    Whomever I am with.
    Just serve.
And when I feel like I have nothing left to give…
    Pray.
    And keep on serving.
    Just like Jesus did!”

    A lovely reminder…

Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
