If you are like me and most young adults today, you probably love music. Personally, I know that I always try to keep my precious iPod close-at-hand and I listen to it whenever I get the chance.
Now, in my family the rule is that iPods cannot be listened to if there is someone else in the room. So, listening to my music does not cut down on family time, but I like to listen to it whenever I am alone. (Which isn’t too often in case you were wondering.) Still, I listen to my music when I’m falling asleep, when I’m working out, when I’m out walking, when I’m studying, and on long car rides when my younger siblings are all asleep.
Since music is in my mind so much of the time, I need to make sure that what I am listening to is profitable and honoring to my LORD God and Father. When I was little, I grew up watching cheesy cartoons and Disney princess stories. (I’m pretty sure that I can safely assume that I’m not the only one.) As a result, I still have some of those old soundtracks and some of the love songs, in which the prince is singing to the princess in metaphors that make me laugh, about how much he practically worships her and her stunning beauty. God has opened my eyes to realize that this is not what true beauty or what true romance really looks like, and it caused me to start thinking when some of these songs were playing through my earphones.
“If these are just lies, then why am I still listening to them?”
“These songs are just nostalgia for me. I’m not listening to them because I believe them.”
“If God is supposed to be my first love, then isn’t there some way that these words can relate to Him?”
It was at this point when I began to change the way I listened to these songs. The lyrics were innocent enough, but I wanted to find a way to turn them from the selfish love of a make-believe cartoon prince and princess and make them about the real, potent, selfless love between Christ and His Bride, the Church.
This is the main point of my thoughts today – I’d like to show you how God changed my thinking by using the song below (There is no real reason I selected this particular one, it just happened to be what I was listening to when I was inspired to write this post.).
This is the song ‘Let Me Be Your Wings’ from the movie ‘Thumbelina’ which was released in 1994. (Yes, is this one of the cartoons I grew up adoring and which I recently tried to watch again and could not bring myself to finish.).
The real song lyrics are in bold and my thoughts are in italic.
Let me be your only love Christ should be my one, only, and true love.
Let me take you far beyond the stars As said in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” and I know that with Him, I can accomplish much.
Let me be your wings (See first line)
Let me lift you high above I should be above the things of this world and be set up as a bright light for Christ.
Everything we’re dreaming of will soon be ours My dreams and hopes should be of Christ. If they are according to His will and I am working only for His glory, my dreams will be fulfilled.
Anything that you desire My desire is to further God’s kingdom, encourage others and win souls for Him.
Anything at all (See above)
Everyday I’ll take you higher I will always reach higher to become more like Christ and fulfill Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Let me be your wings (See first line)
Leave behind the world you know We are not supposed to care about this world which will one day pass away, but instead set our sights on heaven. 1 John 2:16-17: “For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
For another world of wondrous things This is the description of the new Jerusalem from Revelation 21: “…having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed…The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, clear as glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, transparent as glass. And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

Awesome! I do this with secular love songs all. the. time!
Not all of them apply 100% of course, (and many are too nasty to apply at all – I don’t listen to those) but so many of them remind me of Jesus’ deep and cherishing love for me!
Check this out: One Time by Justin Beiber-
“Even though it’s a struggle love is all we got
so we gonna keep keep climbin’ to the mountain top.
Your world, is my world, my fight, is your fight, my breath, is your breath, and your heart…
Girl you’re my one love, my one heart…
Let me tell you one time, Girl I love girl I love you…”
Etc. I love it, because Jesus really does love each one of us individually – since He’s infinite, He can love each one of us with all His passion with and still have it all left for our sister (or brother!)
Blessings!
When listening to music, I ask myself if “is this pure? Lovely? Of good report? Will this benefit me or build me up?”
I love to listen to music, but it is pretty much always praise music or contemperary Christian. I’m so thankful for the selection of musical styles Christians have to choose from!
