Reverent Behavior

Today I am answering the following question from a reader,

Q. What does it really mean to be reverent in behavior and how do I put this into practice?

A. The word reverence, as it is referred to in Titus 2:3-5, can be transliterated as “behavior that becometh holiness” or having a heart attitude that motivates us to live out all that “becometh a women who is consecrated to God.” In other words, we are not to be mirroring the world’s example, but instead we should be set apart to God, acting on our salvation while joyfully serving a Savior that holds us to a higher calling – “Be holy, because I am holy” [1 Peter 1:16].

In being reverent, we are to become an embodiment of a woman who possesses the traits spoken about in Titus 2.

When I read this and consider the word reverent in this context, I envision a woman who embraces and emulates the grace and virtues listed in Titus 2. These are qualities that God considers sacred and holy; qualities that require that we be reverent in our daily lives.

“Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.”
Titus 2:3-5

Blessings to you in your daily walk, as you seek to become a more godly and reverent woman of God!

This inspires me once more to keep striving to live a pure and holy life before God. Those younger women are watching us. God has given me another oppurtunity to teach a younger woman His ways. Even though it takes time, I know I must obey.

Thanks for this, I struggle with what this looks like all the time and find myself sometimes sitting in conversations with people that start out in a fairly good place and then end up in conversations that often have sarcastic humor, or talk in innuendo and feel a bit like gossip – and so I end up coming out feeling slimed – but then I feel like I’m being judgemental – how do I know the difference between knowing what is reverent and uplifting – or me just being judgemental?
