“Send forth Your light and Your truth, let them guide me; let them bring me to Your holy mountain, to the place where You dwell.
Then I will go to the altar of God, to God, my joy and my delight.” Psalm 43:3-4
Oh, how this is my prayer! Lord, that You would guide me and lead me by YOUR Truth and YOUR Light!
When I look around at the times we are living in, I can become fearful and anxious. So many things happening…assaults from the enemy on every side. But, I come back to His Truth. I can pray this over myself, my family, and my nation. I pray that we again would be a nation where God is “our joy and our delight.” This psalm begins, “Vindicate me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation; rescue me from deceitful and wicked men.” It seems, like the writer of Ecclesiastes tells us, “There is nothing new under the sun.” Since the beginning of time, men have struggled. But, it is when we turn to the LORD that we will find our way.
When life seems overwhelming…when we look around and see darkness all around….when we are tempted to get discouraged and fearful…we must cry out to God to send forth His Light and His Truth. Jeremiah tells us that when we search for God with all of our hearts, we will find Him! (Jeremiah 29:13-14) The last verse of Psalm 43 says, “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.” (verse 5)
When we put our hope in GOD, not people or the government or circumstances or a career or anything else, it fills us with peace. We choose to praise, NOT because our hope is in what is going on right here and right now, but because our hope is in the Gospel of Jesus Christ – who He is, what He has done, who we are because of Him and what our inheritance is in Him! Our relationship with the Lord is the key.
My Bible tells me that Psalm 42 and 43 were originally one psalm in the Hebrew. I think that is perfect. Psalm 42 talks about the relationship we have with our Lord.
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” verse 1
When we put our hope in God, when we cry out for His Light and His Truth, He will guide us, filling us with all comfort, peace, and joy. His Light brings us to Him, filling us with His Presence. When we put our hope in God, we will praise Him because He is our Savior and our God.
I encourage you to meditate on psalms 42 and 43 when you are tempted to become “downcast,” and put your hope in God!

“Send forth Your light and Your truth, let them guide me; let them bring me to Your holy mountain, to the place where You dwell.
