I began to lament, “if I just had the time to do this instead of entrusting it to these children who obviously don’t care like I do.” Immediately I felt the conviction of the Holy Spirit and I knew I was in for a little lesson. There I remained on the floor just looking, praying, thinking, and listening.
What I heard was, “Would you like more time to take care of these things?” “What would you like to give up instead?” “Maybe you could give up home schooling, that would give you more time to do this.” “Maybe if you spent less time being a mama and more time cleaning.” “Maybe if you didn’t minister to women on your blog.” “Maybe if you spent less time encouraging your husband and looking for ways to bless him.”
Which of these things, these eternal things, would I give up so the underneath of my stove would be spotless? Would I trade home schooling for, say, shiny sinks? How about grimeless floors and bathtubs? What would I trade for that?
You get the point ladies. We all know this. We just need to be reminded every now and again to keep our eternal perspective! Dirty floors cannot compare in importance to dirty hearts in our children that need the washing of the Word. Nor is sticky goo on the floor more important than playing goo-goo with a tiny, precious baby, right?
A friend told me a story about a family that lived in another country where many Hindu people lived and they commented on how unbelievably happy these people were. When questioned as to the source of their happiness this person said it was because they knew it was the “after this life” that was important. My friend responded that Christians think that too, why aren’t they the happiest people on earth? The answer was humbling and convicting. Because the Hindus actually believe it and live like they do. Ouch!
What is your perspective today? Is it eternal or temporal? What is really more important, your sink or your children?
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:24-26)
What will you give in exchange for your soul, or that of your children’s soul, or your husbands’?

sigh. Thanks Michelle. I reallllyyyy needed to hear that. I have found myself rushing nursing to finish the laundry. GASP. I know, well now I know. I really knew better before but needed that reminder. It’s not how clean my house is that determines how “great or godly” of a woman I am.
Things eternal. That’s where my focus needs to be, that’s where my heart needs to be.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” Matthew 6:33
Amy! That very verse has been echoing in my mind and heart for several days now! I keep preaching it to my children and myself. Such a simple verse, but so powerful and all reaching. When we put Him first, seeking HIM, He really does add “all these things”. Praise Him for His long-suffering with us, as we are sometimes so s.l.o.w to learn this. Thanks for sharing.
Love this Michelle. Puts it all into perspective.xo
Welcome, my new healed and delivered friend!
This was excellent! I constantly have to remind myself that I didn’t stay home with my kids so I could have a clean house! Truly, what WOULD I give up for a spotless house…? None of it!
Thanks for joining in, Coby. When we seek Him first, He really does take care of the rest. Well, He might not clean under my stove . . .
I’m reminded of this poem (not sure of the author), which I think of often when I catch myself being bothered by the little things that go undone around here, with three small children –
“I hope my child looks back on today
and remembers a Mom who had time to play
There will be years for cleaning and cooking
But children grow up when we are not looking
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
‘Cause babies grow fast, we learn to our sorrow
So settle down cobwebs, dust go to sleep
I’m rocking my baby, ’cause babies don’t keep.”
Thanks for the eternal perspective today! (And I for one am so glad you take time to blog rather than scrub under your stove.)
Hi Lindsay, I love the poem! As we are about to celebrate my oldest son’s 23rd bithday, I can attest, babies don’t keep! Thanks for chiming in!!
Love this poem! I need to jot that down and remember it! Thank you for sharing!
Oh Michelle! Your heart is so like mine! Thank you SO MUCH! I needed this reminder. I can get so caught up in the clutter and dirt and everything. I so easily forget the importance of my true job as molder of my little ones hearts and lives.
Hey, Jenn, I hear you! Like I said before, I think we would get along just fine, actually, we do! {{{hugs}}}
Thank you, Michelle. What a great way to put express the feelings we all have! I have to remind myself of this so much and have written a few posts on it myself! May you have a blessed day!
We should read our own posts more often, don’t you think? I was reading some of my older posts and though, ” I should be reading these, I NEED this”
Thanks Michelle for always giving us such great posts!!!
You’re welcome Ashley, thanks for all the work you do behind the scenes too!
Oh Michelle, this spoke to me today. God has been convicting me over and over in this area. Thank you for the beautiful and gentle reminder.
Hi Chelsey, I am so glad the Lord would use my struggles to encourage others.
Thanks for the reminder! I needed it after the way I’ve been feeling/thinking this past week.
Cari, aren’t you glad the Lord knows just what we need, when we need it?
Mmmmmm….love this one. Every day I need to step back for just a moment and say, “what is really more important here?”. It will result in so much more of richness in life and peace in my heart.
Lisa V.
I sometimes wish I had a check list of things I should remember, like this post, each morning before my feet hit the floor!
