Conforming to the World?

As we spend time at the pool this summer, a recurring conversation around our home is about modesty. It seems that there is nothing like pool attire to generate discussion. We have found ourselves referring to this verse quite a bit. It seems the perfect time of year to remind ourselves and our sons and daughters to “not conform to this world….”
Living in it, yes we are.
Conforming to it? We are called not to.

Thanks for the visit, comment and for the reminders that we should not conform to the pattern of this world.I totally agree that we should be a living testimony of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Swim suits are a hard one! Really all of them make me feel like I'm in my underwear!!! When I'm with my mom friends and kids it all feels fine – but as soon as you mix husbands into the group – it's very uncomfortable and I prefer to sit along the side in my coverup!
I blogged about modesty here:

A perfect message for today.
This summer our six-yr-old did not get a swimsuit because she wanted to be like her friends with two-pieces or the one-pieces that may as well have been a tw-piece.
I, again, explained to her about her body being for her husband, when she gets one, and that she shouldn't want other men looking at his gift. I wanted her to get one of the surfer-girl type suits but she said that people would laugh at her.
Okay, I thought, fine, you may have a one piece is truly a one piece but you have to get some swimming trunks to wear over them. She didn't want that either.
Therefore, I told her that I was done with it and that I was not buying her a bating suit. She has been wearing a pair of knee-length shorts and a "babydoll" type shirt as a swimsuit.
On Tuesday, as she was on her way to a neighors house to join them in their pool, she looked at me and said, "Mommy, I learned my lesson about bathing suits." Then she went on her way, with a smile and full of confidence about the "suit" she had to wear!
smooches,

Great message……straight to the point. And speaking The Truth!
Great post – and totally agree!! We really tend to make things complicated but the Bible is really "to the point"….
Great point as my husband has been trying to buy me a bathing suit sense 07. I'm still wearing my bathing suit that I wore when I was 9 months pregnant in 06. It is a 2 piece but it is shorts and a tank top like shirt, its not the greatest but its a lot better then I have found in years.
This was a great reminder and something we talk about alot at our house too. Something else we feel is important though is that if it's wrong for us to dress immodestly ourselves then isn't it just as wrong to take our children to a beach or public pool where all there is to see is nakedness?? I know that I don't want my husband or even young son seeing how most women dress to go swimming nowadays or my daughter be around half dressed men for that matter either! (and thankfully my husband doesn't want to go at all…it's a hard enough struggle to keep pure without putting temptation in front of yourself on purpose) I agree that we shouldn't conform to the world and we can also choose what we put ourselves around while we're living in it!
Thanks for the thoughtful post.
